About Neil Laybourn

Neil’s calling as a personal trainer in the fitness industry began in 2007 and spanned until 2016, he relished in helping people to improve both their health and their own confidence in themselves.

On the 14th January 2008, walking to work, Neil stopped to talk to a stranger about to take his own life on a busy Waterloo Bridge. That 30 minute conversation would continue to have a profound impact on both Neil and that stranger, yet neither of them would have guessed how much.

When both men reunited through a globally reaching social media campaign, Neil’s role in that intervention while continuing awareness of suicide through a TV documentary reaching millions of viewers was recognised through a Pride of Britain award.

Neil became a leading UK mental health advocate in the years that followed. Delivering talks and seminars internationally to dismantle mental health stigma, campaigning alongside British Royalty and raising money while providing ambassador roles for leading mental health charities – this work led to Neil receiving his Honorary Doctorate from Bristol University.

In 2017 Neil developed the idea to unite workplaces and industry around mental health, by 2018 he launched This Can Happen– an award-winning mental health conference which continues to operate with a global presence and impact to this day. The following year the conference had expanded to launch the This Can Happen Awards in order to celebrate the best practice of mental health advocacy in the workplace.

In 2018, Neil co-founded the national charity Beyond along with Jonny Benjamin MBE, the man on the bridge, where Neil’s professional journey in mental health began. The charity provides critical and timely mental health interventions for young people in the UK and Neil continues this day to support its fundraising activities.

In 2021 Neil intimately collaborated on a national TV and social media advertising campaign as the official UK LinkedIn Changemaker for mental health in the workplace. Now a Top Voice and LinkedIn Creator, Neil has an amplified reach to almost 1 Billion LinkedIn users across the globe.
