About Leon McCarron
Leon’s debut book, “The Road Headed West” (2014), chronicles his bicycle journey across North America. Now an Amazon Top 10 best-seller, the book emphasizes the endless possibilities available to us, regardless of our interests, and the importance of dedicating ourselves fully to our pursuits.
In late 2012, Leon undertook a remarkable journey across 1000 miles of the Empty Quarter desert, following in the footsteps of explorer Sir Wilfred Thesiger. He pulled a cart loaded with supplies throughout this arduous trek. This adventure was later featured in a documentary film, “Into The Empty Quarter,” which premiered at the Royal Geographical Society in London.
Earlier in 2012, Leon completed a six-month expedition from Mongolia to Hong Kong, where he served as the primary cameraman. This unsupported journey involved traversing the Gobi Desert in -30°C temperatures, following the frozen Yellow River, camping near the Great Wall, and exploring the wilds of China. National Geographic used Leon’s footage to produce a four-part TV series of the journey, which aired in 60 countries worldwide.
Leon’s other notable adventures include a 14,000-mile solo bicycle journey from New York to Hong Kong, a folding bike trip around the British Isles to climb the Six Peaks, a human-powered descent of Iran’s longest river, the Karun, and a horseback crossing of Argentine Patagonia. These expeditions highlight his dedication to exploring the world’s most challenging and remote regions, showcasing the spirit of adventure and resilience.
