About Dr Sally Uren
Having joined Forum in 2002, originally as Head of Business Programme, Sally has overseen the non-profit’s expansion from its UK roots to running thriving programmes in Europe, the U.S, India and Southeast Asia. This involves working with a range of non-profit, membership and philanthropic organisations as well as with global businesses such as HSBC, Olam, Diageo, Aldi Süd, M&S, Target, and Walgreens Boots Alliance. Sally’s work takes the shape of both one-to-one partnerships and multi-stakeholder collaborations, all designed to address complex challenges in our food and energy systems, and in reimagining why and how a business should operate.
Sally is currently involved in Forum’s flagship projects including: Growing our Future, a collaborative programme designed to scale regenerative agriculture in the U.S; the Business Transformation Compass, a one-of-its-kind guide to just and regenerative business; and the Climate and Health Coalition, which is galvanizing private sector action to tackle the human health impacts of the climate crisis. She is also actively involved in the School of System Change, which aims to build and equip a global community of change-makers. These projects build on a track record of success in driving change for sustainability, most notably through the Cotton 2040 initiative, which over seven years united the cotton industry behind taking a systemic, collaborative approach to transforming cotton supply chains, and the Net Positive Coalition, which from 2013 – 2018 defined and mainstreamed the then-emerging idea of ‘net positive’.
Among Sally’s key passions is inspiring and equipping others to deliver systemic change for sustainability. She speaks at international and national conferences – from GreenBiz and Sustainable Brands in the U.S, to The Economist’s Impact Series in the U.K and the Singapore Institute of Directors in Asia. Alongside this, Sally regularly writes for key publications and has been featured in TIME, the New Statesman, Huffington Post, Management Today, edie, Eco-Business, Business Green and The Independent. Sally has also appeared on broadcast media, including Sky News’ Daily Climate Show and Ian King Live — all with the desire to influence what people think, feel, and do in response to our intensifying social, environmental, and economic challenges
Sally is currently an independent member of Advisory Boards for several global businesses, including Bentley Motors and EcoVadis, and in 2022 joined the Board of Trustees for the Galapagos Conservation Trust. Previous independent advisory positions have included: Co-Chair of the Duke of Sussex’s Travalyst sustainable tourism initiative; Independent Chair of DFID’s Business Partnership Fund; Independent Member of the Investment Committee for the C&A Foundation (now Laudes); and advisor for Burberry and Kimberly Clark. She also acts as a judge for a range of sustainability award schemes, including the Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development.
With a background in ecology, she is particularly passionate about the potential and reality of regenerative business. In December 2017, Sally received an OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for services to sustainability in business.
