About Harriet Harman
Harriet Harman was Legal Officer at the National Council for Civil Liberties, now Liberty, before being elected as Labour MP for Peckham in 1982.
Harriet served on Labour’s front bench in numerous roles including Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Shadow Secretary of State for Employment. After Labour was elected to Government in 1997, she served as Minister in a number of roles including Secretary of State for Social Security, Minister for Women, Minister of State for Justice & Leader of the House of Commons.
In 2007 she was elected as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and served as interim Labour Leader in 2010 and 2015.
Harriet has been Parliament’s most prominent champion for women’s rights and as a Minister was responsible for numerous changes for women including the National Childcare Strategy, new laws on domestic violence and the Equality Act. She was the first Labour woman to answer Prime Minister’s Questions.
Harriet Harman chaired the Parliamentary Inquiry into the Conduct of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
She is the elected Chair of the House of Commons Committee on Standards and as the longest serving woman MP she is currently Mother of the House.
Harriet is Chair of The Fawcett Society the UK’s leading charity campaigning for gender equality and women’s rights.
