About Jody Cundy CBE
Jody Cundy CBE is an illustrious athlete with a remarkable career as an eight-time Paralympic Champion, winning three titles in swimming and five in track cycling. Additionally, he is a 23-time World Champion, with three titles in swimming and twenty in track cycling, and holds three world records.
Born with a deformed right foot, Jody underwent an amputation at age three and received a prosthetic limb, propelling him into a life of extraordinary achievements. At five, his first swimming lesson ended dramatically when a parent rescued him from the pool’s bottom. Determined, his parents enrolled him in a local swimming club where he learned to swim. By ten, he competed for the King’s Lynn swimming club, and six years later, he debuted internationally, stunning everyone by winning gold in the 100m Butterfly at the 1st IPC World Swimming Championships, cutting four seconds off his personal best.
Jody’s swimming career spanned 11 years, during which he amassed 23 international medals, including 14 golds. In 2005, his athletic journey took a new direction when he participated in a disability open day at the Newport Velodrome. His potential in track cycling was quickly recognized. After breaking the British record for the flying 200m in his first race at the national championships, he joined the Newport Velo squad. His impressive training times earned him a spot on the 2006 Paralympic World Cup team, where he helped set a new world record in the team sprint.
Transitioning fully to cycling, Jody claimed his first individual gold in the 1km Time Trial at the World Track Championships in 2006, breaking the world record. Since then, he has remained undefeated in the 1km time trial, winning 14 world titles, the latest in 2023. He currently holds world records in the Flying 200m (10.427 seconds) and the 1km Time Trial (1:01.466).
For his services to disability sport, Jody was appointed an MBE in 2009, upgraded to an OBE in 2017, and further elevated to a CBE in 2022. He received honorary degrees from Anglia Ruskin University and the University of Hertfordshire, acknowledging his contributions to health sciences and sports.
