About Mary Portas
Mary Portas OBE, a renowned businesswoman, broadcaster, author, and activist, has built a career on driving transformative change.
At just 30, Mary became a board member at Harvey Nichols before launching her retail consultancy, collaborating with some of the world’s biggest retail names. Her BBC series Mary Queen of Shops debuted in 2007, cementing her status as a television and radio presenter for the BBC and Channel 4. In 2009, she redefined charity retail by partnering with Save The Children to create Mary’s Living & Giving shops, raising over £30 million nationwide. She also conducted the British government’s 2011 review of high streets.
Mary’s literary contributions include Shop Girl (2015), her autobiography, and two influential non-fiction works: Work Like A Woman (2018), a manifesto on reshaping the future of work, and Rebuild (2021), exploring the emerging Kindness Economy. Her Kindness Economy podcast topped the business charts.
As co-chair of the Better Business Act, Mary leads a coalition advocating legal reforms to align corporate interests with societal and environmental priorities. Her latest podcast, Beautiful Misfits, features inspiring changemakers, while her Channel 4 series, The Great Climate Fight, highlights her activism alongside Kevin McCloud and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
In 2024, Mary was honoured with an OBE in the King’s New Year Honours for her contributions to business, broadcasting, and charity, further solidifying her legacy as a champion for a better, kinder world.
