About Matt Barbet
Matt Barbet is a seasoned broadcaster, renowned for presenting Channel 5’s main 5 News and 5 News Tonight bulletins for over a decade. Currently, he balances his broadcast work with his passion for cycling and his role as a Director at the renowned PR agency, Freuds.
Matt began his news career at Radio 1, progressing to present bulletins for BBC News 24 and BBC London, with occasional appearances on BBC Breakfast. He then transitioned to Channel 5, where he hosted all of their news programmes. During his tenure, he reported from significant events such as the Haitian earthquake and embedded with the Army in Afghanistan.
Later, Matt moved to ITV, co-hosting the breakfast show Daybreak and continuing with news presenting duties for the channel. After Daybreak concluded, he returned to Channel 5.
A fervent cyclist, Matt has hosted ITV4’s The Cycle Show and contributed to Cyclist and Cycling Plus magazines. He has tackled the gruelling L’Étape du Tour in the French Alps and numerous long-distance road routes. He also hosts the Home Roads cycling podcast, sharing his passion for cycling with a broader audience.
In addition to his broadcast achievements, Matt has hosted BBC News 24’s STORYFix and presented regional feeds for Children in Need. He has covered high-profile events such as the Oscars and a royal wedding and even competed in a charity edition of The Chase. As a writer, he has contributed to The Independent, Monocle, and Cycling Plus, and he maintains a monthly column in Bikes Etc.
