About Kate Mosse

She was awarded an OBE in 2013 for services to literature and women and was named Woman of the Year for her service to the arts in the Everywoman Awards. She is a regular guest on book & arts shows on radio and television. As an international bestselling author with sales of more than five million copies in 38 languages, Kate brings her gift for storytelling to her speaking events. Her warm and engaging delivery – combined with her deep knowledge and experienced based on years of research and positive campaigning – captivates audiences, leaving them inspired and motivated. Kate’s expertise as a speaker focuses on three key areas:

The Empowerment of Women – how to be ambitious and successful. Having worked in the publishing industry for ten years in the 1980s and 90s, then being appointed the first ever female Executive Director of Chichester Festival Theatre (with a core staff of 150 people) in 1998 and being Founder Director and Chair of the Board of the Women’s Prize for Fiction, Kate knows from first-hand experience the challenges, the pressures, the conflicts and the opportunities available for women in business. Her philosophy has always been to work hard, to be on top of your brief, to go the extra mile, but also to be yourself and to always support other women. Now, after 37 years working in various professional environments, she seeks to empower younger women and women from diverse backgrounds both to fulfil their own ambitions but to also create more successful, more empathetic and more sustainable workplaces.

How business and the arts intersect and complement each other. For ten years, Kate was a Trustee and the Deputy Chair of the Board of the Royal National Theatre, a multi-million pound business and the largest single employer of theatre creatives within the UK arts sector. She is the only woman to have held the position. Her experience as both an artist – a writer, playwright and non fiction writer – as well as an arts administrator (publishing, CFT, Founder Director of the WPFF) made her uniquely qualified to bridge the gap between business needs and sponsorship, and the needs of artists and creative innovation. She served for eight years on the board of Arts & Business, the leading UK organisation building relationships between arts organisations and commercial sponsors, and judged the A&B Annual Awards on several occasions. Kate’s philosophy is that an excellent sponsorship partnership – such as she brokered between the Women’s Prize and Orange, then the Women’s Prize and Baileys/Diageo – is complimentary, based on both parties ambitions, needs and desire to achieve great things together.

Positive aging. After working in the arts and in business for 37 years, Kate is passionate about acknowledging the power of older people within the workplace and valuing experience. As a carer for the past decade – her book An Extra Pair of Hands was published by the Wellcome Trust in 2021 – her mission is to change the language around aging from one of negativity, a problem to be solved, to one of celebration and respect. As a Celebrity Ambassador for the Parkinson’s Society and a local charity in Sussex, Sage House: Dementia Care she works actively both to promote older member of societies as valued, inspiring and with the potential to lead change, and also to advance the idea that society is stronger when people of all ages, and all abilities, are included.

She is often called on to deliver lectures on key historical individuals or events such as The French Wars of Religion, the Cathar Crusades, Harriet Martineau and Mary Wollstonecraft as well as to talk more generally about how history is made, recorded, lost and found.
